One of the things I notice a lot in different homes I inspect is the lack of structural support. As a general rule if the beam is not up to standards at least make sure there is more structural support under the beam to compensate for that. All types of columns such as wood, steel and concrete are acceptable as long as they are installed or built to take the load above and finally always make sure if you have to install footings or column pads that the soil below is solid enough to go on. (Remember as a rule always work from the bottom to the top)
